THE GRAPHICS GROUP...! The staff at the Science Centre is a deliberate mixture of IBM and non-IBM employees. This blend encourages the collaborative nature of the work of the Centre. The total staff varies between thirty and forty, of whom approximately twenty-five are permanent IBM employees. The IBM employees have a number of different backgrounds. In general, they have a scientific education with experience of developing computer systems, applications and hardware. Many of the project staff will themselves have academic research qualifications. Non-IBM staff work at the Centre under a variety of schemes: - Visiting scientists. The opportunity exists for scientists to take advantage of the facilities to pursue a research project allied to those in the Centre. This may be for any period from a single day up to several weeks. - Research Fellowship. Fellowships are offered for a one or two year period. A significant amount of freedom is available to Fellows to pursue their own research field, within the areas of specialisation of the Centre. - CASE Studentships. The Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) provide a valuable collaborative link between researchers at the Centre and University groups. Students are expected to spend significant periods resident at the Centre. - Industrial Trainees. The Centre has a regular programme of Industrial Trainees (Sandwich Students) and pre-University students. These students provide valuable assistance in various programming projects and in the operation of the DP Centre.
