GRAPHICS GROUP LOGO (WRITE YOUR OWN!) The purpose of this item is to generate a personalised welcoming message on the Vector General to greet visitors to the Graphics lab. The program accepts a string of up to 50 characters (0-9,a-z,A-Z,blank) entered at the terminal and displays the result on the VG in the form of a spiral. The spiral rotates around a molecular representation of F-Met-Leu-Phe (abbreviations of its constituents). The resulting image illustrates intensity depth cueing. This technique enables objects which are at the front of the screen to be displayed at a higher intensity than those at the back to give the impression of depth. Also, the rotation of the spiral demonstrates how advantage can be taken of the speed of the display to give the illusion of motion. The image is refreshed 30 times a second at successively adjacent positions to achieve this effect. The image can also be manipulated using the 3D-joystick.
