The Local Group of Galaxies - Radial Velocity --------------------------------------------- The Local Group comprises 5 spiral, 14 elliptical and 10 irregular galaxies. They range in distance from 160,000 light years for the Large Magellanic Cloud to 2,400,000 for the Andromeda galaxy. (The Milky Way is 80,000 l.y. across) There are also some outlying members such as Leo III which are over 8 million light years distant. The radial velocities vary between 125 km/sec towards the Solar System and 197 km/sec away from it. The following sequence shows the 29 galaxies in the Local Group coded blue (approaching), white (stationary) and red (receding).
